Finances
I've added this page  as I thought it might be interesting for people to see how much it costs to 'run' a moderate number of horses. I always wondered before I owned a horse, how much one would cost to keep. Now I don't like to think about it! Providing costs for 14 horses gives a good 'average' for the basic keep. Bear in mind that our horses are unshod and unrugged which keeps costs down somewhat.

A rough breakdown is given below of what we spent in 2001: remembering that we started the year with 17 horses, and sadly lost 3 old horses during the year, so realistically our costs were supporting 16  horses for the year. For interest, these costs are calculated also per week/per horse. Note also that these figures are for 2001; prices have obviously risen since then.

Cost Per Year          Cost Per Week/per Horse
Feed                                  £993.02                       £1.19
Hay and Bedding             £2289.42                      £2.75
Veterinary care                  £980.65                      £1.18
Wages                              £6929.00                      £8.33
Blacksmith                        £964.00                      £1.16
Fuel                                 £1398.42                      £1.68
Maintenance                    £5396.40                      £6.49
Miscellaneous                  £2095.52                      £2.52
Total                              £21046.43                     £23.62

Maintenance costs were high that year because bad storms did a lot of damage to the yard.
